Computer Use for Guests

The NJIT Library welcomes visitors to use our facilities, services, and resources. Current NJIT students, faculty, and staff have priority of use of the Library’s computers, resources, services, and facilities over guest patrons.

“Guest Patrons” are defined as those who are not currently enrolled as a student at NJIT nor are currently employed by NJIT. NJIT Alumni and VentureLink employees are considered to be Guest Patrons. The NJIT Library offers guest patrons the use of guest computers, consistent with the following guidelines:

  1. The University Libraries Code of Conduct policy and NJIT’s Acceptable Use Policy for Cyber Resources must be observed.

  2. Guest patrons must request and register for computer access with a Library staff member at the Information Service Desk by presenting a valid picture ID. Lab Consultants will not provide guest access.

  3. Access to guest patrons is limited to the designated guest computers located on the semi-circle counter in the Information Commons Computer Lab. Guest patrons may not use computers in the Information Commons unless permission is granted by Library staff.

  4. Guest patrons must respect the rights of others and therefore should refrain from using a guest computer for activities that may make other patrons uncomfortable such as accessing or making any content that may be considered threatening, harassing, intimidating, demeaning, hostile, or offensive, including viewing pornography or other explicit or offensive content.

  5. The Library is not responsible for the loss of data due to service interruptions or for any issues related to the use of external data storage devices. The Library will not assist in the recovery of data.

  6. Computers and equipment are required to be used as-is. Configuration, set-up, or software will not be altered on guest computers.

  7. Copyright law must be observed.

  8. Personal belongings should not be left unattended at a guest computer or anywhere else in the Library. Unattended items will be moved to the Information Service Desk and may be sent to the NJIT Department of Public Safety.

  9. Food and drink should not be consumed at the guest computers. View the Food and Drink Policy for more information.

  10. Library staff reserve the right to ask for an acceptable photo ID at any time.

  11. Guest computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If all guest computers are in use and the patron is accessing library resources for scholarly research, Library Staff may, in their reasonable discretion and in accordance with all applicable laws and NJIT policies, log in a guest patron for one hour on an available non-guest computer.

Public patrons who violate this policy may be asked to leave the premises immediately and repeat violators could have their library privileges, including admittance to the NJIT Library, suspended or revoked. Where appropriate, instances of misconduct may be reported to the NJIT Department of Public Safety.
