IEEE Citation Guide

This guide provides specific examples of how to cite different material types in IEEE referencing style.

Basic format to reference a published conference or proceedings paper in print format

[#]     Author(s) Initial(s). Surname(s), “Title of paper,” in Abbrev. Name of Conf., [location of conference is optional], [vol., no. if available], Year, pp. xxx–xxx.

Referencing elements to cite:

  • [#] Reference number (matching the in-text citation number)
  • Author’s first initial. Author’s second initial, if provided. Author’s last name
  • Title of the paper in lower case, in double quotation marks
  • Abbreviated name of conference following the standard conference terms. Refer Conference name abbreviations box on this page
  • Place of publication. Refer to Place of publication for information on the correct format of locations
  • Include volume and issue numbers if available.
  • Year of publication
  • Page number(s), cited as p. for a single page or pp. for multiple pages.

Basic format to reference a published conference or proceedings paper in electronic format

[#]    Author(s) Initial(s). Surname(s), “Title of paper,” in Abbrev. Name of Conf., Year, pp. xxx–xxx. Accessed on: Month, Day, Year. [Online]. Available: site/path/file (doi:xxxxx or URL) 

Referencing elements to cite:

  • [#] Reference number (matching the in-text citation number)
  • Author’s first initial. Author’s second initial, if provided. Author’s last name
  • Title of the paper in lower case, in double quotation marks
  • Abbreviated name of conference following the standard conference terms.  Refer Conference name abbreviations box on this page
  • Year of publication
  • Page number(s), cited as p. for a single page or pp. for multiple pages.
  • [online]
  • Available: site/path/file location, which can be a DOI, or a full URL
  • Accessed on: Month, Day, Year. Refer to the Abbreviated month section for further information

Conference name abbreviations

Use the following abbreviated standard conference terms in their names. In conference names, omit most articles and prepositions such as ‘of the’ and ‘on’, for example, 4th International Conference on Advances in Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics becomes 4th Int. Conf. Advances Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics.
