Omeka: Creating Items

A brief overview of how to use Omeka to create digital exhibits.

Creating Items

Once you have logged in, you’ll be brought to your Omeka Dashboard.  This is where you'll find information about items, collections, exhibits, and plugins. 

 

To create items, click the button labeled Items in the left button bar.

This brings you to the Browse Items page. To add an Item, click the button labeled Add an Item.

 

This brings you to the Add an Item page.  At this point you can make a decision about how much or how little metadata you want to enter into the Dublin Core metadata fields, and whether or not you want to use a controlled vocabulary.  *Since Omeka is primarily for exhibits, preservation quality metadata is not necessary.

 

 

Associate the item with a collection by selecting a collection from the drop down menu.

 

Once finished, click Add Item. Once the item is added, be sure to save periodically so you don’t lose your work. If applicable add files, tags, item relations, and map location.
