Film and Architecture: Researching a Film

Researching a Film (Books and e-Books)

Classic or widely studied movies or directors such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, or Terry Gilliam will often have books written about them. These can be found by performing a keyword search the library catalog.

However, it may be difficult to find books or e-books on less well-known films or directors.  In this case, think of more general keywords that describe your film or topic.  For example, if you are unable to find a book on the film Cabiria broaden your search terms to "Italian Film" or "Silent Film."

Articles and Beyond

A keyword search for the film Cabiria with the Books+ option will return results for both books and articles.

*With this many results, it's important to check that they are actually about your film or topic.  For example this keyword search displays results for films "Cabiria" (1914) and the Fellini film "Nights of Cabiria" (1957).

Cabiria (1914)

Pro Tip:

  • Exclude results by adding not to your keyword search.  Example: Cabiria not Fellini not "nights of."
  • You could also try adding 1914 to your search. Example: Cabiria 1914. (Be aware that this may accidently exclude results relevant to your topic)
