Professional Development Committee (AASL): Mentoring & Publishing

ARLIS/NA's Professional Development Committee Mentoring Subcommittee conducts both a Career Mentoring and a Conference Networking program, annually. Career Mentoring runs from one annual conference to the next. Conference Networking is open to ARLIS/NA members attending their first or second national meeting. Look for the calls for participants early in the year on ARLIS-L, the Society's listserv.

The VRA's Year-round Mentor program accepts applications at any time, with every effort made to match mentors-mentees within a local chapter. The program is supervised at the chapter level, as far as that is feasible. The Annual Conference Mentor program is open to first- and second-time attendees. Find application forms and information on the Mentorship website.

For academic librarians interested in information literacy instruction and improving their teaching skills. A virtual program open to ACRL IS members, with applications accepted July-September each year. Apply online.

For ALA members employed in a professional library position for 6 months-5 years. The NMRT's Career Mentoring program recruits participants each fall and runs from October to June. Their Conference Mentoring program is for first-time ALA annual conference attendees and recruits participants in the spring. NMRT membership encouraged.

For mid-career librarians ready to assume a higher administrative or managerial role, with some history of community or campus involvement.

Early-career professional development.

A tuition-based professional education program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Six days intensive workshops, summer program.For those with significant leadership or administrative responsibility at a college or university library. Apply online or request a brochure.

Six unique tracks, ranging from one to six days in length: Program, Teacher, Practical Management, Assessment, Intentional Teaching, and Teaching with Technology. Check the program schedule for dates, locations, and application deadlines.

A 9 day program in research methods for academic librarians, held in Los Angeles. The Institute for Research Design in Librarianship is designed to bring together a diverse group of academic and research librarians who are motivated and enthusiastic about conducting research but need additional training and/or other support to perform the steps successfully.
