Best Practices Guidelines for Mentees

  • Take the initiative to contact your mentor and initiate conversations about your goals, challenges, and aspirations. Be bold and ask for help or guidance when needed.
  • Take responsibility for your growth and development.
  • Clearly define your goals and objectives for the mentorship relationship. What do you hope to achieve? What skills or knowledge do you want to develop? Communicate these goals clearly to your mentor.
  • Keep your mentor informed of your progress, challenges, and any support you may need. Be responsive to their feedback and suggestions.
  • Share your challenges, aspirations, and feedback candidly
  • Be receptive to constructive criticism and advice.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask questions, no matter how trivial they may seem.
  • Clarify any doubts to understand the guidance provided fully.
  • Show dedication to the mentorship process.
  • Follow through on commitments and action plans.
  • Respect your mentor’s time and boundaries.
  • Communicate professionally and courteously.
  • Approach the mentorship relationship with an open mind and a willingness to learn from your mentor's experiences and insights. Please keep feedback and constructive criticism in mind. Accept feedback graciously and use it to improve.
  • Reflect on the feedback and implement changes where necessary.
  • Develop a rapport with your mentor beyond formal meetings.
  • Engage in informal conversations and show appreciation for their support.
  • Keep a record of your progress, meetings, and key takeaways.

  • Solicit feedback from your mentor regularly. Use this feedback to identify areas for improvement and adjust your approach as needed.
  • Actively participate in your career development by seeking learning opportunities, taking on new challenges, and pushing yourself outside your comfort zone.
  • Respect your mentor's time and availability. Please be on time for scheduled meetings and come prepared with specific questions or topics to discuss.
  • Show appreciation for your mentor's time, guidance, and support. Thank them for their assistance, and celebrate your successes together.

  • Validate their experiences and offer constructive feedback and guidance based on your expertise.
  • Encourage your mentee to reflect on their strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.
  • Help them set realistic SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals, develop action plans to achieve them, and monitor progress.
  • Offer feedback that is specific, actionable, and supportive.
  • Focus on growth and improvement rather than criticism.
  • Share your knowledge, skills, and insights to help your mentee(s) navigate their careers more effectively.
  • Share relevant experiences, successes, and failures.
  • Empower the mentee(s) to make their own decisions. Support their efforts to solve problems independently.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, resilience, and ethical behavior. Through your actions and decisions, serve as a positive role model for your mentee(s).
  • Understand that growth takes time, and be patient with the mentee's progress.
  • Be adaptable to changes in the mentee’s goals and circumstances.
  • Be a source of encouragement and motivation for your mentee(s). Celebrate their successes, no matter how small, and provide support during times of difficulty.
  • Reflect on the mentorship process periodically.
  • Seek feedback from the mentee(s) and adjust your approach as needed.
  • Provide access to resources and networks, and inform your mentee(s) about professional development opportunities, networking strategies, and industry trends.
  • Introduce your mentee(s) to other professionals in your network who may be able to offer additional support or opportunities for growth.
