Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and Document Delivery Services (DDS)

This guide explains the process of registering information and using ILLiad interlibrary loan at NJIT to request materials not owned by NJIT libraries.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

  • Current NJIT students, faculty, and staff should use the Interlibrary Loan service to request articles and borrow print books and other materials free of charge from other libraries that the NJIT Library does not own.

Document Delivery (DDS)

  • Current NJIT students, faculty, and staff should use the Document Delivery service to request articles or book chapters from the NJIT Library's print collection. The library staff will scan and deliver requests electronically to you.

What is ILLiad?

  • ILLiad is the system used to manage and process ILL and DDS requests. First-time requesters must create an ILLiad account. Once the account is created, requesters can enter new demands, and track, cancel, or renew requests.

Notification of Requests

  • Requesters are notified by email when ILL or DSS requests are ready for pickup. The turnaround time may be as short as 8 to 24 hours for digital resources and up to two weeks for physical materials.

Textbook Requests

  • Please note most libraries will not lend textbooks. We encourage students to ask their instructors to place textbooks on reserves.

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of reproductions of copyrighted materials.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

NJIT reserves the right to refuse to accept an interlibrary loan request or a document delivery request, in our judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

The NJIT Library is recognized for its exceptional speed and participation in the OCLC's Express digital delivery program. The Express program enables digital resource sharing among a select group of libraries using the WorldShare ILL network with turnaround times for lending digital materials within 18 hours or less.

Who May Use ILL and DDS?

  • Current student, faculty, emeritus faculty, and staff.

Who May Not Use ILL and DDS?

  • Alumni, Guests, Visitors, and non-NJIT patrons are not eligible for ILL and DDS services due to licensing restrictions. We encourage all non-affiliate patrons to use their local public library for all interlibrary loan needs.
