SciFinder

This research guide introduces users to the SciFinder database.

References

Initial Search

  • To begin a textual search for references, select the References tab on the landing page.
  • Enter your search string or click the Draw button to import a structure or draw a structure.
  • Once you have your results, select Load More Results (visible in the top left) to see all available references.
  • Here is an example on the detection of PFAS:

Narrowing Your Search

  • You can narrow results by adding information to the search, such as additional keywords or author names.
  • You can also use the Filter Behavior panel to search within the results, and Filter by or Exclude information to narrow the search.

Substances

Initial Search

  • To begin a search for substances, select the Substances tab on the landing page.
  • Enter your search string or click the Draw button to import a structure or draw a structure.
  • If you are searching for a known substance, you can then select the result to find out more information about the substance including key physical properties, experimental properties, regulatory information, etc.
    • Note: You can search for substances using their name, CAS Registry Number, patent identifier, notes, and DOI. You can also narrow the search fields using the molecular formula, experimental spectra, and certain property categories.
  • Here is an example for the substance "perfluoropentanoic acid":

Reactions

Initial Search

  • To begin a search for reactions, select the Reactions tab on the landing page.
  • Enter your search string or click the Draw button to import a structure or draw a structure.
  • Here is an example for the substance "perfluoropentanoic acid":

Narrowing Your Search

  • If you are searching for a known substance, you can also use reaction-specific phrases such as "synthesis of", "preparation of", and "production of" to specify the outcome of the reaction.
  • You can also use the Filter Behavior panel to search within the results, and Filter by or Exclude information to narrow the search.
