The Research Cycle

Explore

1. Explore Your Topic

Do some initial investigating with background research to learn about your topic. Find out how it is discussed, what are some current trends, who is interested in this research?

Refine

2. Refine Your Topic

Now that you have some background information you can start to narrow your topic.

Search

3. Search For Sources

With your refined topic in hand, use library databases to find sources including book chapters and journal articles.

Evaluate

4. Evaluate Your Sources

Before you use a source, take the time to make sure it is appropriate for your assignment. Do you need scholarly sources? Do they need to be recently published?

Write

5. Write

Bring it all together. Use what you learned, your sources, and your argument to pull everything together into a cohesive paper.
