Read and Publish Agreements for NJIT Authors

This guide provides guidance in open access scholarly publishing for authors in all disciplines.

FAQs

Transformative agreements are contracts negotiated between institutions (such as libraries or national and regional consortia) and publishers to fundamentally shift the business model of scholarly publishing. Rather than paying for access to journals, institutions support Open Access publishing by covering article processing charges (APCs), allowing research to be freely available to the public.

The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) is a global index of over 19,000 peer-reviewed OA journals. You can search by subject, peer review type, Creative Commons license, and filter for journals that do not charge APCs.
Use DOAJ’s filters to discover OA journals that charge no publication fees—many reputable OA journals operate under this model.
Also use Think. Check. Submit. to avoid questionable publishers. It helps researchers identify legitimate OA outlets that follow ethical publishing practices.
"How Open Is It?" is a visual guide created by SPARC, PLoS, and OASPA. It explains key elements of openness—like copyright, reuse, and discoverability—to help you assess a journal’s OA policies.
Use the Journal Checker Tool by cOAlition S. Enter the journal title, funder, and institution (NJIT) to see if the journal complies with your OA mandates.
The Creative Commons Guide for Scholarly Publications helps authors understand license types—like CC BY and CC BY-NC—and what they mean for sharing, reuse, and derivative works.

If NJIT does not have an agreement with your publisher, consider these funding options: (1) Research grants - many allow APCs as budgeted expenses; (2) Departmental funds - your department may offer support; (3) Collaborative funding - co-authors from institutions with agreements may help cover APCs.
Use Digital Commons @ NJIT to deposit your Accepted Manuscript (AM) versions of published work. This platform is indexed by Google Scholar and increases the global reach of your research.
Currently, NJIT does not fund Book Processing Charges (BPCs) for Open Access books. Authors should explore alternative funding through grants or departmental sources.
