  • APC Fees: APC is required for open articles.

  • Examples: Some journals from Elsevier, Wiley, Springer.

  • Key Point: Only some articles are open; the rest are behind a paywall.

  • Read/Access:  Immediate Access: No paywall - anyone can read, download, and share the article.

  • APC Fees: Article Processing Charges (APCs): Authors (or their institutions/libraries/funders) pay a fee to cover the publishing costs.

  • Examples: PLOS ONE, BioMed Central (Springer Nature), MPDI, Scientific Reports.

  • Key Point: Everything published is open immediately.

  • Read/Access: Entire journal is free for both authors and readers.

  • APC Fee: Funded by universities, societies, or grants.

  • Examples: Cultural Anthropology.

  • Key Point: No fees and fully open.

  • Read/Access: Authors self-archive a copy in a repository (preprint or postprint).

  • APC Fee - No fees. There may be an embargo period before public release.

  • Examples: Uploading to arXiv, PubMed Central, or an institutional repository.

  • Key Point: Free access outside the publisher’s website.

  • Read/Access: Articles are free to read on the publisher’s site.

  • APC Fees: No fees. No clear reuse rights (no Creative Commons license).

  • Example: Temporary free articles during special promotions or public emergencies (COVID-19).

  • Key Point: Free to view, but limited permission for reuse and share.
