Women in Architecture and Design: Contemporary Women

Liz Ogbu

Founder of of Studio O, a multi-disciplinary practice that uses community centered research to produce equitable architecture and participatory engagement strategies to empower marginalized groups. Ogbu has worked as an educator at UC Berkely, Stanford, California College of the Arts, and University of Virginia.

Amale Andraos

Co-founder of the firm WORKac, and Dean Emerita of the Colombia GSAPP. Amale Andros has led classes and seminars, and published on topics related to representation in architecture, the Arab city, and ecological aspects of architecture and landscape design.

Sarah Wigglesworth

Founder of an eponymous studio, Sarah Wigglesworth is known for her eco-design, including her famous "Straw Bale House", and other works focused on passive and sustainable design. She is also a longstanding advocate for women in the architecture profession.

Anab Jain

Co-founder and Director of Superflux speculative design studio, Jain produces installations, writings, films, and multi-media experiences envisioning possible futures. She has worked for clients including Google, the United Nations, the United Arab Emirates, and more.

Fernanda Canales

Critic, scholar, teacher, and award winning Mexican architect. Canales is known for designs that foreground the social possibilities of architecture in community building, including her recent series of civic projects built for the Mexican government in under resourced towns. She has taught at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and the Architectural Association in London, and has had her work shown at venues such as SFMOMA and the Venice Biennale.

Jeanne Gang

Founder of Studio Gang and MacArthur "genius" grant recipient, Jeanne Gang has been noted as one of the leading architects of her generation. Her work is known for taking into account environmental and contextual factors, and for ecological design in urban environments. She is also known for developing publications and exhibitions that increase public awareness and propose solutions to social and environmental problems. Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, The International Venice Architecture Biennial, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Mariam Issoufou

Nigerien architect and founder of atelier masōmī. Issoufu's practice utilizes the techniques of her American architectural training to create buildings for her native Niger, using materials and tectonic forms informed by local context. She is also a professor at ETH Zurich.

Gabriela Carrillo

Recipient of the Médaille d'Or Palmarés from the Academy of Architecture of France, named architect of the year by Architectural Digest Mexico, and Architectural Review London, Gabriela Carrillo founded her own workshop in 2017. Her works include prominent public structures like the Museum of Cinema and Digital Video library and two courthouses, as well numerous private residences.

Angela Brady

Angela Brady is co-founder of Brady Mallalieu Architects, and served as president of the Royal Institute of British Architects from 2011 to 2013. Her firm has won awards for designing buildings and environments internationally. She is especially known for her housing and public spaces.
