    Q: Does the library have the journals and databases I need?

A: You can check for individual journal titles or library database subscriptions from the library homepage.  When in doubt, email your liaison librarian (see the back of this sheet) or   You can obtain on-site guest access to print and electronic sources at Rutgers by walking over to the nearby Rutgers Dana library.  For cited reference searches beyond Google Scholar, use Rutgers for the Web of Science and NJIT for Scopus.


    Q: How can I request materials not owned locally?

A:  Request articles and books online. The online request form is available on the Library website via the Interlibrary Loan tab on the library homepage.  Journal articles are typically delivered electronically within 24 hours.  Hard copy books can take a week or sometimes more.  New books for the library should be requested through your liaison librarian.  They can sometimes be ordered RUSH, but may also take a week or more   The library does not purchase course textbooks. 

    Q: How can I put material on reserve for students?

A:  Library books, e-articles, and e-books may be put on reserve by sending a request to the Circulation Dept.  You may also place your own personal copy of a book on reserve.  These books are not usually in the online catalog, but are kept behind the circulation desk under the professor's last name (at both the main library and Littman Architecture Library).  See the policies and procedures at    

    Q: Do I need a password?

A:  Sometimes. For remote access to e-journals and databases, as well as electronic course reserves, a UCID and password are required.  No password is needed to search the book catalog.  You also need an academic domain account to use a PC in the library. To create an account go to  You cannot connect to the Rutgers Library via remote access.  VPN is never required for library access.

Q: How do I borrow books and other materials from NJIT and other NJ Libraries?
A: Use your validated NJIT ID card with a NJIT library barcode to request and borrow materials from the NJIT libraries. Also use it to borrow materials from other libraries via Interlibrary Loan and obtain walk-in book borrowing and onsite database privileges at Rutgers Dana Library and some other libraries.   Contact a librarian for details on cooperating libraries.

    Q: How can I get help if I have trouble finding what I need?  How can I make suggestions for new materials?

A:  Consider your librarian a friendly colleague who is anxious to help.  Get to know your librarians by subject or departmental specialties listed on the back.  At any time you can phone, or email, or chat 24/7 with us.  See our Ask Us options at

    Q: What is information literacy and what is my role in it?

A:  The Institute Information Literacy Plan adopted in 2009 specifies courses in each dept that are required to incorporate information literacy instruction and assessment as part of the curriculum.  Yours may be one of them.  Check the information literacy website for more information. or ask your Liaison Librarian.   He or she will be glad to collaborate with you on any course where an assignment requires students to find and use information beyond the syllabus. 

        Q: Does NJIT provide access to citation management software?

     A:  Yes.  Endnote can be downloaded from the software download site.  The librarians conduct period workshops on using Endnote.  Ask your librarian for help. may be accessed via Moodle.
