Architecture

This guide provides a starting point for finding architectural resources

Using General Sources for Background Research

General sources are those that compile, summarize, index, or help identify scholarly sources related to a particular subject. They are helpful for background research or to get an overview of a topic before delving into secondary or primary sources. They include dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, and other reference materials. A very select set of resources is listed below. Many more titles can be found on the page Design Process and by searching the online catalog or the A-Z list of databases.

Databases for Background Research in Architecture

Several databases are beneficial for students, professionals, and anyone interested in architecture research. Below, you will find links to these resources, as well as tutorials on how to use them.

  • Start with keywords: like architect names, movements (e.g., Bauhaus), or building types (e.g., skyscrapers).

  • Use filters: Limit to peer-reviewed or scholarly sources if you need academic credibility.

  • Check bibliographies: Articles often cite additional key sources.

  • Numerous resources that can be found on the page Images on JSTOR Getting Started will help you to find, use, save, and store Images on JSTOR.
