Policies

The University Libraries welcome visitors to use our buildings and resources. The primary purpose of the University Libraries’ computers and computer equipment is to meet the research and study needs of the students, faculty and staff of the New Jersey Institute of Technology. They have priority over guest patrons in the use of all resources, services and facilities. The University Libraries offer visitors the use of guest computers, consistent with the following guidelines:

  • Public patrons must observe the University Libraries Code of Conduct Policy and the NJIT’s Acceptable Use Policy for Cyber Resources.
  • Public patrons may only use the designated guest computers located on the semi-circle counter opposite the Information Commons Computer Lab up to three-hours per calendar day and up to three (3) visits per semester. Guest computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If all guest computers are in use and the patron is accessing library resources for scholarly research, the Lab Consultant or Library Staff may in his or her reasonable discretion and in accordance with all applicable laws and NJIT policies log in a public patron for one-hour use of non-guest computers, if any are available.
  • Public patrons may not use computers in the Information Commons computer lab that are designated for use by NJIT students, faculty and staff, unless access is permitted in accordance with the above bullet.
  • Public patrons must request and register for guest computer use by presenting a valid picture ID (driver's license, passport, company or college  ID) to the Lab Consultant or to a Library staff member for registration.
  • Public patrons must respect the rights of others and therefore should refrain from using a guest computer for activities that may make other patrons uncomfortable such as accessing or making any content that may be considered threatening, harassing, intimidating, demeaning, hostile, or offensive, including viewing pornography or other explicit or offensive content.
  • The library is not responsible for the loss of data due to service interruptions, for any issues related to the use of external data storage device, or assist in the recovery of data.
  • Public patrons are required to use the computer as-is and the library will not alter the setup or configuration of the equipment or software on any guest computers.
  • Public patrons must strictly observe copyright laws.
  • Public patrons should not leave personal belongings at a guest computer. Unattended items will be moved to the Circulation Desk and may be sent to the NJIT Department of Public Safety.
  • Must not consume food or drinks other than those in closed containers. View the Food and Drink Policy.
  • The Library staff member or Lab Consultant reserves the right to ask for an acceptable photo ID at any time.
  • Public patrons who violate this policy may be asked to leave the premises immediately and repeat violators could have their library privileges, including admittance to the University Libraries, suspended or revoked. Where appropriate, instances of misconduct may be reported to NJIT’s Department of Public Safety.
