What is MLA?

MLA is a citation format commonly used in the humanities, such as writing and literature.

The parts of a book citation in MLA are:

  • Author(s)
  • Title (most styles require Title to be underlined or italicized)
  • Edition (if applicable)
  • Place of Publication
  • Publisher
  • Publication Date
  • Medium of publication (Print, Online, Film, DVD, etc)

Article Citation MLA

The parts of an article citation in MLA are:

  • Author(s)
  • “Title of Article”  (most styles require quotes around the title)
  • Title of the magazine or journal  (usually underlined or italicized)
  • Volume  & Issue (ie. 44.5) Page numbers
  • Database where you retrieved the Article (ie. Academic Search Premier)
  • Date you accessed the article (if electronically)
  • Medium of Publication

The parts of a website citation in MLA are:

  • Author
  • “Title of Page”
  • Organization associated with the site
  • Date of last revision/posting of website (if not available, write n.d. for no date)
  • Date you accessed the site
  • Web  (it is the Medium of Publication)
  • url (electronic address if not too long to cite.)
