Teaching Guides - Engineering Subject Centre 

The Engineering Subject Centre has produced a series of peer reviewed guides looking at various aspects of teaching and learning aimed at all those involved in engineering education.

 

Effective research Assignments

A.  Use assignments that exercise 'research muscles' such as:

  • locate, summarize, analyze sources
  • annotated bibliographies
  • research logs
  • edit "Wikipedia" articles
  • examine coverage of a controversial topic in several sources
  • brainstorm key terms to use in order to find information on a given topic
  • compare internet and database searches on a precise search topic; compare the findings

B.  Spend some class time discussing the research process, how information is structured, what resources are appropriate at different stages

C.  Use a series of small assignments independent of the final project, which are designed to familiarize students with  wide variety

D.  Bring in a librarian
